The Sam Houston Bearkat Softball team took on the Southeastern Louisiana University Lady Lions at home in a three-game series over the weekend. The Bearkats won the series taking two out of three.
Game one of Saturday’s doubleheader kicked off at 3 p.m. with sophomore pitcher Regan Dunn getting the start for the Bearkats. Sam Houston would lose game one 13-0 in five innings.
The first inning saw a couple of hiccups for the Bearkats with a throwing error from third base and a walk. Dunn got out of the inning unscathed, but the second inning would not be as pleasant as the Lady Lions began what would be a blowout of a game.
In the top of the second inning, the Lady Lions would score five runs on three hits and one error, making two of the runs unearned. The fourth inning would also see the Lions pile on more runs, with seven in the inning and one more run in the fifth for good measure.
The Bearkats could not put on a good enough offensive display to compete, only collecting three hits.
Game two began shortly after and proved to be a much more favorable game for the Bearkats, as they gave the Lady Lions a taste of their own medicine. Freshman pitcher Mika Vento would get the start for the Bearkats and the bats would come alive this time around.
There were many offensive highlights to go around with freshman first baseman Kylie Hobbs doubling in the bottom of the first, bringing in two runs. Next, senior second baseman Brooke Malia would send one over the fence for a two-run homer.
The Bearkats would pepper on four more runs with the assistance of some of Southeastern Louisiana’s four errors in the game throughout the remaining five innings of the game to win the ball game with a final score of 8-0.
The Bearkats would play their third and final game of the series on Sunday evening and steal the series with a narrow 4-2 victory. Vento would get the victory again as she would pitch all seven innings of the ball game only allowing two runs, one earned.
Senior center fielder Megan McDonald would lead the way with three hits on the day. Freshman third baseman Courtney White was the leader in the game with two runs batted from her two hits.
The Bearkats softball team will travel to Waco, Texas, to take on the Baylor University Bears Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.
