The Sam Houston Bearkat soccer team (2-6 overall, 0-1 conference) fell to the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks (3-5-1, 1-0) 2-0 in their first matchup since joining the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).
The Bearkats had six shots in the first half of the game but only one in the second half, none finding the back of the net. Sophomore defender Katarina Baehren and senior midfielder Ashley Friedrichs were the only two Bearkats to register shots on goals with a total of three.
The Ladyjacks opened up the scoring in the 24th minute of the game thanks to a goal coming off the foot of senior forward Teia Haynes. The Ladyjacks would go on to double their lead with a penalty kick goal in the 69th minute of the game.
Sam Houston attempted to gain momentum back with less than two minutes left with a corner kick that neared the goal but was ultimately saved by the goalkeeper of SFA.
SHSU continued on their trend of using both goalkeepers in their games, with senior Abby DeLozier getting the start and junior Tatum Krueger playing the second half of the game. Each allowed one goal, with DeLozier having two saves to Krueger’s five.
The Bearkats will travel to Edinburg, Texas, to face off against their first new WAC opponent in the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros.
