The Sam Houston Bearkat volleyball team kicked off their Western Athletic Conference (WAC) campaign with a 3-1 victory over the Tarleton State Texans Thursday night. This win is the Bearkats eighth overall win of the season.
Senior outside hitter Ashley Lewis led the way for the Kats with 19 total kills, having sophomore outside hitter Catherine Krieger right behind her with 15 kills. Lewis would shine on the night as she hit .265 on the night, adding 23.
Freshman libero Hannah Baker continued her great start to the season leading the team with 24 digs, one above Lewis. Baker would also have two ace serves on the night.
Sam Houston held a 2-0 lead to begin the game taking the first two sets in dominating fashion. The Kats took over the court with set victories 25-17 and 25-12 in the second set.
The Texans would comeback in a tight third set with a 26-24 victory, cutting the lead down to one set for the Bearkats.
In the fourth set, the Bearkats would clinch their first WAC win over the Texans thanks to a 25-21-point victory.
Bearkats volleyball team will continue WAC play against the Abilene Christian University Wildcats on Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
