The Sam Houston Bearkat women’s basketball team picked up their first win of the 2022-23 season Wednesday with a 101-55 blowout win over the Jarvis Christian Bulldogs.
The Bearkats (1-2,0-0) were coming off a tough loss against the Texas State Bobcats in which they led for three quarters. Against the Bulldogs (0-2) was the right place to do it in order to get that confidence boost and have the new players get used to the system.
The bearkats were down 8-4 early but took the lead back with 5:19 left in the first quarter off a three pointer from graduate transfer guard Chyna Allen
Allen had her best game as a Bearkat so far with 28 points on 64.7% shooting that included four 3-point shots.
Another newcomer in sophomore transfer center Kenyal Perry also had her best game as a Bearkat with 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
The Gulfport, Miss., native was attacking the Bulldog defense all night everywhere. She continues to show Sam Houston brought her here.
Redshirt-junior forward Kaylee Jefferson nearly notched a double-double with 17 point and nine rebounds.
Senior forward Madelyn Batista also got close to a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Bearkats move up to 4-0 all time against Jarvis Christian, scoring an average 100.25 points per game in all games.
The Bearkats will stay in Huntsville for a few days before heading off on a three-game road trip beginning Sunday against the Tulane Green Wave (2-1,0-0) at New Orleans.
Sam Houston is 1-2 all time against the American Athletic Conference opponent. The last time these teams faced was back on March 21, 2013, where Tulane beat SHSU 65-57 in the WNIT.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
