FORT WORTH, TX- After a tough 39-point loss at Tulane, the Sam Houston Bearkats women’s basketball team turn it around and upset Big 12 team Texas Christian University Horned Frogs 60-54 Wednesday night.
The Bearkats (2-3,0-0) led for the majority of the game as the Horned Frogs (2-3,0-0) either turned the ball over or could not get clear looks.
Senior forward Madelyn Batista led the way scoring wise for the Bearkats. She kept using her athleticism to not only get inside the paint but also create shots for herself.
She would finish with 16 points and five rebounds.
Heavy favorites TCU found themselves down 31-22 at halftime.
After an evenly battled third quarter, the Horned Frogs battled back and tied the game at 46 in the middle of the fourth quarter.
Graduate forward Lucy Ibeh was doing it all for the Horned Frogs in the quarter as she was scoring from what it seemed like everywhere. She would finish with a double-double at 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Teammate graduate guard Emily Fisher tied the game with a tough layup. She finished with seven points.
Head coach Ravon Justice saw enough and called timeout. With the game winding down and TCU with all momentum tying the game up, it seemed like the another game was going to slip away from the Bearkats.
Then the storm happened.
Graduate transfer guard Chyna Allen led a 14-8 Bearkat run to end the game and grab the win.
She showed off her clutch skills by making key baskets and making the shots at the free throw line.
Allen finished with a game high 16 points and added four rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Junior forward Kaylee Jefferson and sophomore transfer guard/forward Mikayla Eddins finished with 10 points each.
As a team the Bearkats dominated the paint with 42 points scored in there. They also dominated in another way in the paint by winning the rebound battle with 42 boards to TCU’s 36.
Sam Houston’s defense forced 14 turnover that included six steals.
The Bearkats had lost 15 games in a row against TCU dating back to 1996. The Bearkats before that won the previous four games, having the all-time record of 4-15 against the Horned Frogs.
The streak ended Wednesday and marked the first time the Bearkats won against TCU since 1985.
The Bearkats head back to Huntsville, Texas, with a chance to get to a .500 record on Sunday when they face the St. Mary’s Rattlers.
Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be radio broadcasted on 90.5 KSHU.
