Sam Houston Bearkat women’s basketball late scoring run was too late as they fell to the rival Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks 62-55 Thursday night.

The Bearkats (8-10, 4-4) were down for most of the game as the Ladyjacks (17-3, 7-1) capitalized on more mistakes than their counterparts.

SFA were up 34-24 at half time and took an offensively stagnant 3rd quarter from the Bearkats to make it a 18-point lead at the end of the quarter.

The lead got up to 23 with 6:11 left in the 4th quarter for the Ladyjacks off a lay-up from sophomore guard Angel Scott.

The Bearkats were not going to let the rivals go easily.

After that lay-up Sam Houston went on an impressive 18-2 run. Senior forward Madelyn Batista contributed six of her eight points on the run.

She also helped on the rebounding side on a night she finished with eight rebounds.

It was too late, however, as the buzzer sounded to end the game.

Both teams had a tough time handling the ball as Sam Houston turned the ball over 20 times and Ladyjacks conceded 22 of their own.

The one thing that separated both teams was the shooting.

While Sam Houston shot 38.2% from the field, SFA shot 46.5%.

The Ladyjacks were led by junior forward Avery Brittingham’s game high 21 points in which she shot 9-for-10 from the field.

For Sam Houston graduate transfer guard Chyna Allen scored a team high 17 points.

Fellow sophomore transfer guard Tierney Coleman added 10 points.

The Bearkats will finish their three game homestand Saturday as they will face the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros (7-11, 1-6).

The game will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and on the radio airwaves of 90.5 KSHU.

Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
