The Sam Houston Bearkats escaped Edinburg, Texas, Wednesday as they defeated the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros 67-65 courtesy of a game winner by Cameron Huefner.
It was another tight game between the two teams who last faced each other on Jan. 21 when the Bearkats (17-5, 7-3) defeated the Vaqueros (11-12, 2-8) 83-64.
While the margin of victory was large, UTRGV played it close until they wer held without a made shot for the last seven minutes of that game.
This time around was different as the Bearkats and the Vaqueros were locked up.
Seven times the game was tied along with six lead changes.
UTRGV had help from a standout performance from leading scorer of the Western Athletic Conference senior guard Justin Johnson.
Johnson had 22 points in the effort.
The Vaqueros also had freshman guard Adante’ Holiman with 15 points off the bench. All points came from downtown as he went 5-for-5 from the arc.
Sam Houston were seemingly running away with it when they were up 63-54 off a 3-pointer from senior transfer guard Qua Grant with 3:46 left in the game.
The Vaqueros then went on an 11-2 run that tied the game 65-65. Johnson tied the game with 30 seconds left with a 3-pointer.
The Bearkats had the last possession. Grant tried to win it with a layup but was blocked by graduate forward Dima Zdor.
However, the Bearkats got the offensive rebound as a team and called timeout with four seconds left.
Head coach Jason Hooten drew up a play.
On the inbound pass the ball found Huefner.
The sophomore transfer forward from Adelaide, Australia, gave the Bearkats their fifth straight win when he hit a baseline fadeaway jumper at the buzzer.
A new moment to remember from this season.
The hero of night Huefner had 13 points.
Grant led the team with 16 points along with three assists.
Junior transfer forward Kaosi Ezeagu had one of his best games of the season with 12 points and eight rebounds.
The bench has also continued its success behind sophomore transfer guard Lamer Wilkerson’s 12 points.
The Bearkats will look to continue their success.
It was the start of a two-game road trip for the Bearkats as they will now head back up north to Huntsville, Texas, to prepare for their next game against the University of Texas-Arlington Mavericks Saturday.
The game will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and on the radio airwaves of 101.7 KSAM.
