Five-game winning streak ends for the Sam Houston Bearkats as they were defeated by the University of Texas-Arlington Mavericks Saturday evening 70-58.
The Bearkats (17-6, 7-4) and the Mavericks (8-15, 3-7) were tightly contested for the first eleven minutes of the match.
The Mavericks would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game when sophomore forward Montez Young Jr. hit a jump shot to make 22-21 with 8:49 left in the first half.
Sam Houston couldn’t find an answer as UTA amassed an 18-point lead at halftime.
The Kats would come out swinging once the second half began.
They were able to cut the deficit to five at 61-56 with 3:49 left in the game after a pair of free throws from senior transfer guard Qua Grant.
UTA then put it away quickly.
For the rest of the 3:49 the Mavericks went on a 9-2 run to finish the game.
Freshman guard Chendall Weaver led the way for UTA with 21 points and four assists.
Weaver and his teammates put up a 54.3% performance from the field as a team.
This was far better than the Bearkats as they shot only 32.8%.
Sophomore transfer Cameron Huefner led the way with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Fellow sophomore transfer guard Lamar Wilkerson had 12 points.
Sam Houston will have a week off before going back on the road to Stephenville, Texas, as they will face the Abilene Christian Wildcats Saturday.
The game will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and on the radio on 101.7 KSAM.
Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m. CT.
