Sam Houston Bearkat women’s basketball grabbed a close 59-58 win on Saturday afternoon against the Tarleton State Texans.
The victory came hard though for the Bearkats (12-12, 8-6) as they were down 47-38 at the beginning of the fourth quarter against the Texans (7-19, 1-14).
Tarleton State outscored Sam Houston 21-11 in the third quarter to get out to that lead.
Sam Houston would then outscore Tarleton State 21-11 in the fourth quarter to get the win.
The hero of the night was redshirt sophomore guard Mikayla Woods when she hit the go-ahead bucket with 24 seconds left in the game.
Woods finished with a game high 20 points along with eight rebounds and five steals.
She also went a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
Sophomore transfer guard Tierney Coleman continued her stellar production off the bench as she scored 10 points along with five rebounds.
Although not a good shooting night, redshirt junior forward Kaylee Jefferson got seven points led the team with 11 rebounds.
The Bearkats have been playing close games but with their play they secured a spot officially to the Wester Athletic Conference Tournament in Las Vegas.
But they still have a chance to get in a better seeding position.
Next game is Thursday against Piney Woods rival Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks at Nacogdoches, Texas.
