After going 2-3 in the Tracy Beard College Classic, Sam Houston Bearkat softball turned it around Tuesday after defeating the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers 7-5.
The Bearkats (5-6, 0-0) led 7-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Lady Panthers (0-8, 0-0) were mounting a comeback.
Sophomore two-way player Brailey Wasik did not have much trouble since she came in for senior pitcher Regan Dunn in the fourth inning with one out.
In the seventh however, the Lady Panthers seemed to had the comeback energy in them as they were working around Wasik.
Wasik was able to get two outs but not before allowing two runs to cross the plate with one being unearned after an error at second base.
With runners on first and second with the tying run at the plate with two outs, head coach Garrett Valis called on graduate transfer pitcher Emma Guindon to get the final out.
Guindon would get the out.
It was in courtesy of sophomore outfielder Brodie Quinlan, junior infielder Emily Telg and sophomore infielder Elia Hebel.
Lady Panther junior Karina Cisneros hit a run-batted-in single to right field that scored a run.
Junior infielder Jaylyn Davis tried to go from first base to third base on the hit to get in better scoring position.
Quinlan fielded the ball and threw it on a relay to Telg who threw it to Hebel at third and Hebel tagged Davis out to end the ballgame.
While wild, a win is a win.
Dunn got her second win of the season to bring her record to 2-1. She 3.1 innings allowing two earned runs while getting four strikeouts.
Wasik also went 3.1 innings while three runs with only one being earned. She got three strikeouts.
Guindon threw just the 0.1 inning.
Hebal had been struggling at the plate to begin the season but turned it around.
The Albany, Texas, native went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI while also scoring two runs.
She also got her first home run of the season in the sixth inning.
That was directly after sophomore infielder Tricia Yarotsky hit a solo homer of her own.
Sophomore outfielder Jordan Peno went 1-for-3 with a RBI in the fourth inning.
Junior outfielder Ellie Grill continued her good hitting with a RBI single in the seventh inning to add an insurance run.
Grill has now had a hit in nine of her first 10 games of the season.
The Bearkats will be home in Huntsville, Texas, for the next couple days before going down to Houston to participate in the Houston Tournament.
Their first of five game will be on Friday against the Pittsburgh Panthers from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
First pitch is at 12:30 p.m. CT.
