Beginning one of the biggest events in college baseball with a win will always set you on the right foot.

That is what the Sam Houston Bearkats did Friday night in Round Rock, Texas, as they dominated all nine innings against the Iowa Hawkeyes to win 6-0 to start the Karbach Round Rock Classic.

The Bearkats (4-2, 0-0) accumulated 15 hits against the Hawkeyes (3-1, 0-0) only got three.

“These guys work really hard in their approach, they hit a lot,” Bearkat head coach Jar Sirianni on the offense.

Iowa overall only had five baserunners.

Early on it looked like was going to be a pitching duel between Hawkeye junior right-handed-pitcher Ty Langenburg and Bearkat junior RHP Coltin Atkinson.

Sam Houston would strike first in the second inning with a run-batted-in infield single to Langenburg by junior transfer outfielder Joe Redfield.

Then the Bearkats would get a run in the fourth inning off a RBI single by junior outfielder Clayton Chadwick that scored sophomore catcher Walker Janek who doubled the at bat before.

The Kats were hitting cylinders off of Langenburg.

He eventually got knocked at in the fifth inning.

In the first five pitches senior infielder Myles Jefferson doubled, sophomore outfielder Lane Brewster put down a sacrifice bunt to move Jefferson to third and then junior infielder Justin Wishkoski drove in Jefferson with a single.

It was 3-0 Bearkats.

After a pair of 2-out singles by Janek and Chadwick later in the inning that loaded the bases, Langenburg’s night was finished.

He would be relieved by redshirt sophomore utility/RHP Keaton Anthony.

Anthony would leave the bases loaded.

Langenburg would eventually get the loss going 4.2 innings allowing nine hits and three earned runs. He would get six strikeouts.

It was a different story for the opposing Bearkat pitcher.

Coltin Atkinson had trouble at first after allowing a hit and a walk in the first.

His battering mate Janek would save him more trouble after picking off graduate utility player Brennen Dorighi at first base after Dorighi walked.

After that, Atkinson was near perfect the rest of his outing.

From the beginning of the second inning to the end of the sixth inning Atkinson retired 15 straight batters.

It was domination from the Porter, Texas, native.

“I had just good fastball command in and out… just letting them put the ball in play and trusting my defense to get some outs and that’s what worked,” Atkinson said on his outing.

He would finish with his first win of the season with seven scoreless innings pitched allowing only three baserunners with seven strikeouts.

Before he left, the Kats added one run in the sixth inning via a Jefferson RBI double.

Junior transfer RHP Chandler David would pitch the rest of the way

He worked a three up, three down in the eighth inning.

In the ninth inning the Kat offense was not done.

After a Jefferson single, Brewster walk and a Wishkoski single, Iowa pitcher Keaton Anthony was relieved and junior left-handed-pitcher Nick Gottilla stepped in.

Gottilla gave up two runs with the bases loaded after a Janek hit-by-pitch RBI and Chadwick RBI walk.

He worked out of the jam with no further damage but Sam Houston got insurance to make it 6-0.

David had a bit of trouble in the bottom of the ninth inning after giving up a hit and a walk.

That did not matter.

He dominantly capped the game with his fifth strikeout to go two scoreless innings.

Chadwick finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Janek, Jefferson and Redfield all finished 3-for-4 with a RBI each.

Wishkoski went 2-for-5 with an RBI of his own.

The Bearkats will continue the Karbach Round Rock Classic Saturday as they will take on the Kansas State Wildcats.
