Commencement Etiquette
Fall 2022 Graduation Ceremonies are scheduled for December 9th and 10th at the Sam Houston State University Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
Students, including those who are graduating as well as representatives of student organizations are required to observe the SHSU student and Student Organization Commencement Etiquette Policy. The Registrar’s Office sent out an email to all students involved.
Commencement is a celebratory occasion for students and their loved ones. Sam Houston State University is making the safety and efficiency of the program a priority. Students are expected to participate or observe the ceremony in a quiet, attentive, and respectful manner. Graduating students must not delay or disrupt the program and must follow instructions for the formal occasion throughout the ceremony.
According to the graduation team, students and guests must be courteous and refrain from extensive celebration that disrupts or drowns out the announcement of the name of another graduate as each graduate deserves to have their name heard by family members and friends as they proceed across the stage.
For safety purposes, graduates are not allowed to carry nor be accompanied by any individual or animal during their participation in the ceremony. However, a service animal may accompany an individual with a disability. Those requiring a service dog must provide a notice through submission of the Commencement Accommodations Request Form at least two weeks in advance. For any accommodations needed, students can contact the Registrar’s Office through email at registrar@shsu.edu.
For purposes of the policy, graduates participating in the commencement ceremony still remain “students” subject to the SHSU Student Code of Conduct. Failure to adhere with the policy may result in a University fine of up to 300 dollars per violation and student discipline for the graduate, student, or organizations.
The University’s main website also states important information for guests attending the ceremony. There is a clear bag policy in place at the Johnson Coliseum (clear bag no larger than 12x12x6 or purse no larger than 4.5×6.5) and there will be a security bag check prior to entering. Umbrellas, outside Food and Drinks, airhorns, large bags, strollers, and tripods are all under the list of prohibited items.
When arriving at the ceremony, students should check-in at the Health and Kinesiology Center at least one hour prior to their scheduled ceremony. Signage will be posted in the general area to follow to the check in location. Guests may park in several lots at no charge for Commencement. Complimentary shuttles will be available 90 minutes prior to each ceremony for impaired guests. All guests must present a ticket to gain admittance. A live webcast will be provided for all ceremonies for those who are unable to attend.
As stated in the email sent out by the Registrar’s office, “The University wants to ensure that everyone has a memorable commencement as they celebrate a significant milestone in their lives in a safe and respectful environment”.
