The 2022 Sam Houston State University Homecoming Parade swept the streets of Huntsville this past Friday afternoon. The Homecoming Parade, which has become one of the school’s many traditions, is a chance for the university and its many organizations to show off their Bearkat pride to the surrounding Huntsville community. It is a celebration and a way to excite others about the football game that traditionally falls on the Saturday of Homecoming week. From 19th street to the Walker County Annex, this event spreads joy and pride all over the town. This year’s Homecoming theme? Agent 0079.
The Agent 0079 theme combines both the James Bond 007’s brand as well as the university’s founding year which is 1879. The Student Activities Board explained the theme by stating, “After years of being known as one of the top agents in the entire world, Special Agent 0079 is tasked with a special mission: to travel to Sam Houston State University and save Homecoming”.
Floats from many different organizations throughout the school filled the streets of Huntsville in true 007(9) fashion. Greek Life organizations are always there to participate! Zeta Tau Alpha teamed up with Delta Tau Delta to show off their secret spy skills as well as their Bearkat pride. Other floats came from organizations such as The Wesley Foundation. The Sam Houston State University Marching Band as well as spirit teams such as Cheerleaders and the Orange Pride Dance team led spectators in cheers and chants to get everyone excited for the football game to come. Finally, a large float showcased the 2022 Homecoming King and Queen finalists. The 2022 Homecoming Queen candidates included Katelyn Martin, Uri-El Jackson, and Hannah Whittington. The 2022 Homecoming King candidates included Braden Wright, Troy Holmes Jr., and Matthew Alvarez.
Year after year, the Homecoming Parade serves as an opportunity for Sam Houston State University to bridge the gap between the university and its surrounding community of Huntsville. Students throw candy and other fun treats to the children and their families who line the streets to watch the parade.
Whether it is a current student, a Huntsville local or Bearkat Alumni, Homecoming Week as well as the annual Parade is a time for all to come together.
