Student Activities will hold its seventh annual Sam JAM event Wednesday beginning at 8 p.m.The event, part of Homecoming 2002, is free to students and will be held in the Coliseum parking lot. Students can play games and eat free food, courtesy of Student Activities.Michelle Aleman, student assistant with Student Activities, said the Sam JAM is meant to increase school spirit and let students have a fun time.”It’s an event that we have every homecoming where we bring out games and allow students to socialize,” said Aleman. This year, the Sam JAM will feature such games and challenges as a Velcro wall climb, bungee basketball and bouncy boxing. Also, SHSU Program Council is offering an M-4 simulator, which is new to the event this year. The simulator is an amusement park attraction where the rider is placed in an enclosure supported on hydraulics, which then twists and turns to match the actions of the film being shown to the riders inside.Junior Stanley Barr has not yet been to a Sam JAM event and is looking forward to it.”I’ve never been to one; this is my second semester here and my first Homecoming,” said Barr.Barr said the events seem like they will be similar to the ones talk show host David Letterman would do as stunts on his show, and he is looking forward to crawling on the Velcro wall.”Now I’ll get to feel the same feeling Letterman felt when he did the Velcro wall years ago,” said Barr.Sam JAM will also feature a karaoke machine, and the school cheerleaders and Orange Pride will also be on hand to perform for the audience.Student Activities is also providing free food and drinks for the students in attendance, including pizza from Pizza Pro.Junior Shantle Foster said she is looking forward to socializing with others at the event.”I go for the people, to talk to friends,” said Foster. “Just getting out, seeing people, showing school spirit.”Aleman said participation in the event counts towards Spirit Points for university organizations. Any organization that either helps set up or clean up the Sam JAM event will get 75 points toward the Spirit Competition. The only requirement is that each organization provides at least five members to help at the event. The organization that gains the most points during the week of the Homecoming events will receive a cash prize of $200 from Student Activities. The event is scheduled with weather permitting. There are currently no contingency plans in case of poor weather, so if it rains the evening of the event, Sam JAM will be cancelled.
