Betts finishes third at javelin in Austin

Roshunda Betts finished third in the javelin and won the “B” section of the triple jump to highlight action for the Sam Houston State University track and field team at the Texas Relays in Austin last weekend.

Betts’ triple jump mark of 42 feet, 6.25 inches was a school record and ranks as the top mark in the Southland Conference this spring as well as an NCAA regional qualifying mark. Her third place javelin throw of 164 feet, four inches surpassed throws by athletes from Kansas, Washington State, Texas A&M, SMU, Pacific, Northwestern St. and SFA.

“Roshunda is proving to be a big meet performer,” Sam Houston head coach Curtis Collier said. “These performances at a national caliber meet like the Texas Relays are great preparation for our championship season that begins in mid-May with our Southland Conference Meet, extends through the NCAA Region Meet in Austin in late may and culminates in the NCAA Championships in Sacramento in early June.”
