How to practice sexual safety for Valentine’s Day

It is getting close to Valentine’s Day, again. Although February is typically associated with pink and red hearts, chocolates and even roses, the week of Valentine’s is also Sexual Responsibility Week.

Hosted by BACCHUS Peer Education Network, Sexual Responsibility week will feature student activities that reflect the importance of sexual responsibility for you and your partner. Information will be provided for sexually transmitted infections and testing, healthy relationships, and consistent and correct use of condoms.

“We hope that all students would be sexually responsible all year round, but this week provides a great reminder to students,” Michelle Lovering, Health Program Coordinator said. “In the end, we hope that students understand that there are always going to be some risks involved with sexual activity, but with the right information and the right protective behaviors, one can be sexually active and healthy.”

On Monday, Feb. 12, students had the opportunity to address their sex questions, in a presentation entitled “Let’s Talk About Sex.” The event started at 6:00 p.m. in Smith Hudson 139. Julio Asencio from Planned Parenthood discussed the importance of sexual responsibility and provided free condoms and information about free HIV testing.

Today and tomorrow, Frb. 14, students can surprise their Valentine with a condom bouquet. From 10 a.m.-2 p.m., students can purchase a condom rose. An individual rose costs $.50, and a dozen from $5.00. Students can also pre-order roses. The deadline to pre-order condom roses was Feb. 9 at 5:00 p.m.

Today, students can come to “Sex in the Dark,” a discussion moderated by Michelle Lovering, the Student Health Center health programming coordinator. Sex in the Dark is a discussion format that allows students to bring up questions about anything sexual with anonymity because no one can see them with the lights out. The program will begin at 5:00 p.m. in the LSC room 304.

By attending these events, students also have the opportunity to receive a free coupon for a free rapid HIV test on Feb. 15 at Planned Parenthood.
