Bomar less than impressive in Bearkats’ final scrimmage

With temperatures dipping into the low 50s on Saturday, the Sam Houston State University Bearkat Football Team held their second and final scrimmage prior to their annual Orange-White Football game.

Once again all eyes were on quarterback Rhett Bomar.

The 6-ft. 2-in. 215 pound transfer from Oklahoma was nearly flawless in the team’s first scrimmage on March 31st, completing 14 of 15 passes for 261 yards, and three touchdowns, yet didn’t quite dazzle those in attendance with his performance on Saturday.

Bomar struggled at times with several overthrown passes, deflected passes and two consecutive interceptions.

Following the two consecutive turnovers, Bomar bounced back by leading the offense on a 50-yard drive, cumulating on fourth-and-goal with a six-yard run by Bomar.

Despite the mediocre passing game, Bomar still showcased his athleticism by running a variety of offensive plays, including three-step, five-step drop passes and executing the screen as well as the quarterback keeper, the bootleg and the option.

Returning QB Brett Hicks also performed below expectations, throwing just one touchdown and an interception throughout the game.

Fortunately for the Bearkats, running back Chris Poullard served as the redeeming bright spot for the offense as the 5-ft. 3-in. sophomore showed good hands by catching a few passes out of the backfield and scoring a 2-yard rushing touchdown.

Dustin Dziuk also impressed at tight end with a six-yard touchdown pass.

The Bearkats’ will commence for the last time in the spring season on April 21 for the annual Orange-White Game, with kickoff set for 10 a.m. The 2007 season opener will be played on Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. at Bowers Stadium against Angelo State.
