I have gone through a lot of life events as of recently and I have been trying to decide what will make me feel better. I cant afford to go on an extravagant trip and I cant blow off my classes just yet. So I have decided that I am going to get a furry friend. Should I get a dog or a cat?

Dear Furry Friend,
I am so excited that you have decided to get a pet. I love my animals and they bring me great joy every day. This is a serious decision, though. Pets need a lot of attention and they cost quite a bit of money if you think about all that you have to buy for a pet, such as food, veterinarian costs, etc. The ASPCA states that the first year of owning an animal you are looking at about $1,000-$1,900 depending on the type of animal you decide to get.
Also, a pet takes quite a bit of responsibility. They require companionship and love that sometimes as college students, we cannot provide. They need to be taken out, played with and not neglected.
If you have thought all of this through and still really want an animal, I can help. At my home, I have seven dogs and four cats. I love them all equally.
I believe, in part, it has to do with where you live. If you live in an apartment complex, I believe a cat would be better. They can deal with smaller spaces better than dogs and they do not have to be taken out like a dog.
If you live in a house with a yard, I believe a dog would be better. They can run around your yard and get exercise.
Also, it depends on what you are looking for in an animal. If you really want a companion by your side 24/7, I would get a dog. They all love to be with you when you are home. They will snuggle with you and never get their feelings hurt. Theyre very forgiving and faithful.
A cat, on the other hand, does its own thing. They will definitely love on you but they are just fine lying in a room by themselves because theyre independent. Many cats have to come to you first if they seek attention.
If I had any advice to give you, it would be make this decision very carefully. Animals are not something you can just give away or give back when you are tired of them. They need love and attention.
Finally when you do decide to get your furry friend, please get them from a shelter. There are so many animals in the shelter that need owners. The shelter always has a range of small and large dogs and many different types of cats.
