After an impressive first day in the NCAA Bowling Championship, Sam Houston dropped two matches to Arkansas State and Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday afternoon, eliminating them from the championship.

The Berakats came into the day as the number three qualifier after going 5-2 day during the qualifying round on Thursday.

“It was a tough day for us,” head coach Brad Hagen said. “I thought we played pretty well, we just couldn’t come up with the big shots when we needed them.”

SHSU defeated five of the eight seeded teams they faced on Thursday including Central Missouri, Nebraska, Arkansas State, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin-Whitewater to advance to Friday’s best-of-seven bracket play as the three seed.

Unable to carry over momentum from Thursday, the Bearkats could not get anything going against number six Arkansas State. The Red Wolves started strong and did not slow down, sweeping the Bearkats in four games. The Kats showed signs of life late in the first game, but fell 210-192.

After losing to ASU, the Bearkats dropped their final match of the day against Fairleigh Dickinson 4-2. The Bearkats were unable to come back after FDU took the first two games of the match.

“Give credit to FDU,” Hagen said. “They finished strong. It’s really difficult to try and come out of the losers bracket to get to the finals.”
