LSU shutdown SHSU in season opener

Sam Houston State women’s basketball team dropped their season opener 71-45 to Louisiana State in Baton Rouge, La. on Saturday.

SHSU held a slight lead early in the first half and left for halftime only down by seven. Following the intermission, the Tigers would dominate the second half to outscore the Bearkats 39-20.

Bearkat junior guard Shernise Robertson finished with a game-high 21 points and four steals. Robertson shot 7-15 from the field, including 5-10 from three. Robertson would be the only Bearkat to score double digits. Junior post Shadijah Moore recorded a game-high nine rebounds.

Freshman guard Jenna Deemer led the Tigers with 16 points, making seven of her nine shots. Sophomore guard Raigyne Moncrief led the Tigers with eight rebounds – five being offensive – and added 12 points.

LSU commanded the boards as the Tigers out-rebounded the Bearkats 47-24. The Tigers recovered 23 offensive rebounds and 24 defensive rebounds.

This is the second straight season the Bearkats have scored only 45 points in the season opener. SHSU made 17-45 from the field for a 37.8 shooting percentage while LSU would go 28-66 for 42 percent.

SHSU will tipoff Friday at 11 a.m. in its home opener to Wiley College in the team’s annual “Pack the House” game at Johnson Coliseum.
