The search for a job after graduation may not be easy, but most students expect it to be fairly straight forward.
The problem is not all job applications are legitimate. Students often fall prey to scams in disguise as job applications.
The Sam Houston State University Student Money Management Center hopes to prepare students who are making their way into the workforce at the “Don’t Get Hooked event” Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Theatre.
“The main purpose of the event is to inform students about job scams, possible financial consequences and what to do if you find yourself in that situation,” Erick Funes, a peer financial coach at the SMMC, said. “They will learn how to recognize job scams, red flags associated with it, damages that can be done to their finances and a step-by-step [way] to resolve it.”
When looking for jobs right out of college, students often give out information freely in hopes of getting a job. The SMMC wants to discourage students from doing that and help them learn to be more discerning.
“[Students] should really be conservative with their personal information, and that they need to keep up with [the] latest scam trends,” Funes said.
The SMMC encourages all students regardless of classification to attend the event. The SMMC offers information on identity theft, fraud and credit throughout the year. The SMMC will also host several upcoming events at the end of the semester. “Weddings on a Dime” will help couples to plan out their finances for the upcoming nuptials April 29.
