Golf competes in their second go-round

Sam Houston State’s golf teams had their second set of tournaments this past week.

 

The men’s team played at the All-American Intercollegiate at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas on Friday February 19 thru Sunday the 21.

 

The women’s team played at the 2016 Islander Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas on Monday February 22 and Tuesday 23.

 

SHSU women’s finished their tournament in fourth place by shooting a 298 in the first round, 308 in the second and a 317 in the final.

 

Senior Nicole Budnik led the women’s team tied in 17 place with Aries Ramirez from Houston Baptist University. Budnik shot a 74 in the first round, a 75 in the second, and an 81 in the final.

 

Following right after Budnik by just one stroke was freshman Jenna Phillips. Phillips ranked 19 after shooting a 77 in the first round, a 79 in the second, and a 75 in the third.

 

The University of Texas at San Antonio led the tournament with a 289 in the first round, a 291 in the second, and a 304 in the final round that gave the team total score of 884. In second place was Lamar University who shot a 297, 301, and 307 giving them a total of 905.

 

SHSU men’s finished their tournament tied for 13 place with Rice by shooting a 302 in the first round, a 303 in the second, and a 305 in the final round.

 

“The team played very good in stretches and then we lost momentum in the middle of our round,” Coach Brandt Kieschnick said. “I’m very excited how this young team is shaping up for the spring. This is a young team gaining very good experience and I think we have a very good shot at sinning another Southland Conference Championship.”

 

The men’s team was led by sophomore Jake McCrory who was in a five-way tie for 26 place after shooting a total of 221 which led the team. McCrory shot a 74 in the first round, a 77 in the second, and 70 in the third.

 

“McCrory had a very good last round and I think that will transition into more food finishes throughout the spring,” Kieschnick said.

 

Senior Andrew Ertel ended tied for 41 place in a five-way tie as well after shooting a 75 in the first round, a 72 in the second, and a 77 in the third ending up with a score of 224.

 

Arkansas led the tournament shooting as a team a 300 in the first round, a 276 in the third and a 279 in the final. Arkansas had the lowest score of the tournament with an 855.

 

Houston was second in the tournament by shooting a 278 in the first round, a 285 in the second, and a 293 in the third round that received a total of 856, just one stroke away from tying with Arkansas.

 

The men’s team will play again February 29 at the Jones Invitational at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, California.

 

SHSU women’s team will play on March 7 at the UTRGV Women’s Collegiate at McAllen Country Club in McAllen, Texas.
