The Sam Houston Bearkats volleyball team defeated the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks in a commanding sweep to stay perfect in conference play.

The Bearkats came into play having won their first two games in their new conference and continued the steam into Friday night’s matchup. Senior outside hitter Ashley Lewis led the way with 13 kills on the night. She was followed by junior outside hitter Breanne Chausse and Sophomore outside hitter Catherine Krieger with 10 kills for each player.

In the first set of the game, neither team was able to pull away as the score would stay within two points until the Bearkats took the largest lead of the set 16-12. The Ladyjacks would storm back to take a 19-17 lead but this would not stop the Bearkats.

While being down 23-21, Sam Houston would finish with a 4-0 scoring run to take the first set.

Set two would follow a similar suit as no team would pull away early in the set. While up 21-19, the Ladyjacks would commit four straight errors to give the Bearkats the second set of the game 25-19.

Going into set three, the Bearkats knew what was at stake and came out ready. Just as the first two sets, SFA would not let this be an easy win for the Bearkats but that was not enough to stop them. The Bearkats would gain a 17-13 lead and never look back. They would go on to win the third set 25-19 and sweep the Ladyjacks in Huntsville for the first time since 2012.

Junior setter Morgan Janda would lead the way with 31 assists on the offensive side of the ball while freshman middle blocker McKenzie Morvant would be a defensive force leading the team with six blocks on the day.

Freshman libero Hannah Baker would once again lead the team in digs with 13 in the game.

The Bearkats will look to continue their undefeated play in the WAC as they travel to Lamar University to take on the Cardinals Thursday, Oct. 14.
