Kats Tame the Wolverines Behind Stellar 3-Point Shooting

The Sam Houston Bearkats win their second straight game as they outmatched the Utah Valley Wolverines 71-56.

Four Bearkats (8-9, 4-3) got into double digit scoring as the Wolverines (4-15, 1-7) couldn’t get back into the game.

Junior forward Raanee Smith nearly notched a double-double as she got 16 points along with grabbing nine rebounds.

She also had the possibility of a five-by-five game as she added two assists, two blocks and three steals.

To add it on, she was on the court for 30 minutes even though she did not start this game.

Daily starter senior forward Madelyn Batista was limited to only nine minutes as she found herself in early foul trouble.

Following behind Smith for Sam Houston was junior forward Kaylee Jefferson who got 15 points along with five rebounds.

She was a part of a 3-point barrage as the Bearkats hit 12 three pointers. It was three off from the record of 15 made 3-point shots in a ballgame as a team.

Jefferson went 3-for-5 from downtown.

Redshirt sophomore Mikayla Woods also hit three 3-poiners as she got 13 points on the effort.

Like Smith, the Pflugerville, Texas, native was on the cusp of a five-by-five game. Woods added four assists, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

The winner of the Sam Houston 3-point barrage was redshirt-sophomore guard Sydnee Kemp. She scored 12 points with all of them coming from four shots from the arc.

The Wolverines could not find any answers against the Bearkats despite 17 points and five assists from the freshman guard Kaylee Byon.

Utah Valley junior forward Shay Fano added 16 points.

The visitors had seven players on their roster that were listed as out before the ballgame and with the limited players head coach Dan Nielson had it was going to be tough.

After the game the Bearkats with Justice and her coaching staff celebrated the head coach as last Thursday night she grabbed her 100th career coaching win.

A special moment in the middle of a tough stretch in Western Athletic Conference play.

The Bearkats will have five days off as they will continue their three-game homestand as they will face Piney Woods rival Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks.

Game will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and radio broadcasted on 90.5 KSHU.

Tip-off is at 5 p.m. CT.
