Kansas City Police Seek Help Finding Vehicle of Interest After Fatal Shooting Near Forty Second and Troost That Killed Rhegan Spiegel

Kansas City police seek a gray Nissan Altima linked to a homicide near 42nd and Troost

KANSAS CITY, MO — Kansas City, Missouri, police are asking for the public’s help identifying a vehicle of interest tied to a recent homicide near 42nd Street and Troost Avenue.

Investigators say the case involves the death of 28-year-old Rhegan Spiegel, who was shot Sunday night. Officers responded just before midnight to the 1200 block of East 42nd Street after a report of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found Spiegel lying in the street. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her gunshot injuries.

Police describe the Nissan Altima they want to trace

Detectives say the vehicle they are trying to locate is a gray 2008 Nissan Altima. Police describe it as a two-door model with black wheels, a black rear bumper and a loud exhaust.

Investigators also say the car carries a Missouri temporary paper tag numbered 008RGK6. Officials have not publicly said who owns the vehicle or how they believe it may fit into the case.

The request for help suggests police are still piecing together the movements of people or vehicles connected to the shooting. At this stage, the Altima is being treated as a vehicle of interest rather than a publicly named suspect car.

What happened on East Forty second Street Sunday night

Police said the shooting call came in shortly before midnight, sending officers to a residential block in east Kansas City. The area around 42nd and Troost is one of the city’s longtime east-west corridors, and the block where the shooting happened sits just north of 42nd Street.

Spiegel was found in the roadway after the initial response. Emergency crews transported her to a hospital, but she did not survive.

No additional details about the circumstances of the shooting have been released, including whether investigators have identified a motive, possible witnesses or a suspect. Police have also not said whether the shooting was targeted or random.

Homicide investigators are asking for tips from the public

The Kansas City Police Department Homicide Unit is handling the investigation and is asking anyone with information about the vehicle to call 816-234-5043.

Police are also urging anonymous tips to be left through Greater Kansas City Crime Stoppers at 816-474-8477. Crime Stoppers says tips can also be submitted online or through its free mobile app at P3Tips.com.

Officials say callers who want to remain anonymous should use the Crime Stoppers line. Depending on the information provided, the program could offer a cash reward.

How the case fits into Kansas City’s homicide picture

The killing adds to the broader toll of homicides in Kansas City, where police and community groups continue to track deadly violence throughout the year.

KSHB 41 News has maintained a homicide tracker for the Kansas City area since 2015, reflecting the continuing public attention on violent crime and the families affected by it.

For now, investigators are focused on identifying the Altima and determining whether it was involved in the shooting that killed Spiegel. Any new information could help detectives narrow the timeline and locate people connected to the case.

What investigators have and have not said so far

Police have released a description of the car, the temporary tag and the circumstances of the homicide, but they have not announced any arrests. They also have not said whether additional evidence has been recovered.

At this point, the public request is one of the most concrete steps investigators have shared. That means the case may now depend on tips, surveillance video or sightings of the vehicle described by police.

Anyone who believes they have seen the Nissan Altima or knows who was driving it is being asked to contact detectives immediately.
