WENTZVILLE, MO — An 18-year-old Wentzville man died early Sunday after being struck by a tractor-trailer on an Interstate 70 ramp in St. Charles County, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened at about 3:38 a.m. on the Interstate 70 ramp to Route W. Investigators said the man was on foot when a westbound 1999 Kenworth W900 hit him.
Fire department personnel pronounced him dead at the scene at 4:20 a.m. The Highway Patrol identified the truck driver as a 36-year-old man from Clarksville, Tennessee.
Crash occurred before dawn on the ramp to Route W
Few additional details about the moments leading up to the collision were released, but the location places the crash on a highway connector used by traffic leaving Interstate 70 for Route W. The patrol did not say why the pedestrian was on the ramp or whether any other vehicles were involved.
The timing suggests very light traffic conditions, though investigators have not said whether visibility, speed or roadway conditions played any role. The incident remains an active matter for highway authorities and local agencies that assisted at the scene.
Emergency responders reached the area after the impact, and the fatality was confirmed less than an hour after the reported crash time.
Truck driver was identified as a Tennessee man
The vehicle involved was a 1999 Kenworth W900 traveling westbound, according to the patrol. Investigators said the truck sustained minor damage and was driven away from the scene after the collision.
The driver was wearing a seat belt, the Highway Patrol said. Officials did not report any injuries to the truck driver.
The patrol did not release any citation or criminal filing information in connection with the crash. It is unclear from the public details whether further findings will be issued after the investigation is completed.
State patrol investigators and local police assisted
Trooper M.L. Kelly of the Missouri State Highway Patrol led the investigation, with help from the agency’s Major Crash Investigation Unit. Several other troopers and officers also assisted at the scene.
Those helping included Sgt. M.A. Frigy, Troopers D.R. McKenzie, J.E. Childers, C.B. Townsend and B.T. Dorff, Commercial Vehicle Officer R.E. Fain, along with the Foristell Police Department and the Wentzville Police Department.
The involvement of multiple units suggests a detailed reconstruction effort, which is common in fatal traffic crashes involving large commercial vehicles. Authorities have not said whether any mechanical issue was suspected.
Fatal highway crashes remain a major safety concern
Crashes involving pedestrians on interstate ramps are especially dangerous because drivers and people on foot have little room to react. On highways, even a brief encounter can turn deadly when a tractor-trailer is involved.
This case also highlights the risks on access ramps, where vehicles may be entering, exiting or changing speed in close quarters. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has not said whether weather, lighting or roadside conditions contributed.
For residents in and around Wentzville, the incident is another reminder of how quickly a routine route can become a fatal scene before sunrise.
What is known and what remains unanswered
So far, the patrol has confirmed the victim’s age, hometown, time of death and the fact that he was walking on the ramp when he was hit. It has also identified the truck and its driver and said the vehicle left the scene under its own power.
Still unknown are the exact circumstances that put the pedestrian in the roadway, whether there were warning signs or lighting issues nearby, and whether investigators expect additional findings. The Highway Patrol has not announced any charges.
The crash occurred in St. Charles County, and the fatality was recorded during the early-morning hours of Oct. 18.
