PORT CLINTON, OH — Police in Port Clinton say surveillance video captured the last known image of 14-year-old Harley Dilly before he disappeared from his home on the morning of Dec. 20. Detectives shared new details about the case as they continue trying to piece together where the teenager went and who he may have been with.
Investigators say the image appears to show Dilly crossing the street in front of his house. Port Clinton Detective Ronald Timmons said the sighting is the last confirmed trace of the teen, who has remained missing since that morning. Police believe he may be in danger.
Detectives say his routine makes the disappearance especially concerning
Timmons said the disappearance stands out because it does not fit Dilly’s usual habits. He described the teen as someone with a very specific schedule who ate certain foods, bathed several times a day, and generally stayed close to home.
That pattern, police said, makes it harder to believe he simply left on his own and vanished without a plan. Investigators have said the available evidence suggests he was not intending to spend a long stretch of time outdoors, especially given the weather that morning.
Police said it was 18 degrees with snow on the ground when Dilly left home. He was wearing a thin sweater, sweatpants and a thin puffy coat, details that investigators say add to their concern about how long he could have remained outside.
Police think he may have gone to meet someone not yet identified
Based on the timing and clothing, Timmons said investigators believe Dilly likely expected to meet someone. The detective said police have not identified that person.
That possibility remains central to the investigation as officers try to determine whether the teen left voluntarily, was lured away or encountered someone after leaving home. Police have not publicly said whether they have narrowed the search to any specific location or suspect.
The case has drawn significant attention because the teenager disappeared in the middle of winter and has not been seen since. Detectives say every piece of information matters as they continue to search for a trail.
Reward money has grown as community members push for answers
Several organizations have put together nearly $10,000 in reward money for information that leads to Dilly’s safe return. The growing reward reflects the level of concern around the case and the hope that someone who knows something will come forward.
Police have asked the public to share any information, no matter how small it may seem. The investigation has relied heavily on tips as officers try to reconstruct Dilly’s final movements and identify anyone he may have contacted.
Authorities have not said how many tips they have received or whether any have led to major breaks. For now, the reward remains one of the main tools pushing the search forward.
His mother speaks publicly and says the waiting has been painful
Heather Dilly spoke publicly for the first time on Friday since her son disappeared. In an interview with Cleveland ABC station WEWS, she said the experience has been overwhelming and far more difficult than she expected.
She said she believes someone must have seen something and that she is still hoping for answers. Dilly also said she did not believe her son had run away, though she said if he did, she wants him to come home.
Her comments reflected both frustration and hope as the family waits for information. She said she loves her son and urged him to return safely, adding that the family needs him.
Broken phone and inactive social media accounts limit investigators
Timmons said Dilly’s cellphone was broken when he left home, a detail that removes one of the most common ways missing-person cases can be tracked. Police also said the teen had a significant social media presence, with accounts on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Reddit.
Investigators say none of those accounts have shown activity since he disappeared. That silence has given police few digital clues to follow and little sign of communication after he left home.
Officials described Dilly as 4 feet 9 inches tall, about 100 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. He was wearing glasses when he went missing, and police are using that description as they continue asking the public for help.
Police ask anyone with information to call Port Clinton officers
Authorities say anyone who may know where Dilly is should contact the Port Clinton Police Department at 419-734-3121. Investigators have not said when they expect to release additional updates, but the case remains active.
As police continue trying to identify the person they think he may have planned to meet, they are still urging anyone with even a small clue to step forward. For now, the surveillance image remains the most important visual evidence in the search.
The teen’s disappearance has left family members, neighbors and investigators waiting for a break that could explain what happened after he walked away from home that winter morning.
