Mixing pizzas and pumpkins

Last Friday, Omega Psi Phi in conjunction with Papa Johns Pizza and Best Game Sports hosted an event at Emancipation Park for the children of the Boys and Girls club.

The event volunteers prepared 60 pumpkins, each filled with a Papa Johns personal pizza.

Event sponsors hosted the event before Halloween so the kids could have their pumpkins ready for trick-or-treating later this week.

Ten kids were also given free t-shirts through games and sports-related questions organized for the event.

“They really enjoyed it- the kids had smiles on their faces,” Steven Lewis, member of Omega Psi Phi, said. “They wanted us to stay- they need role models.”

Papa Johns, one of the sponsors, decided to participate after finding over 150 pumpkins in a manager’s shed.

Rather than throw them away, she contacted the Boys and Girls club and helped organize Friday’s event.

As for future plans, there are hopes to organize an event around Thanksgiving.

“The more people that turn out to help and volunteer, the more we can do as a community” Lewis said.
