Tomorrow the Sociology Club is hosting its annual “Population Awareness Day” event in the Lowman Student Center Theatre. During the event, the Sociology Club will provide experience and activities, including the popular “Snickers Speech,” that will help depict the different aspects of the population at Sam Houston State University including race, culture, and economic standing.
“Ideally, we want all the kids to come out that can,” Sociology Club public relations officer Alex Moore said. “We know a lot will come out because it’s being offered as extra credit to sociology students, but maybe they can learn something while they’re there.”
The events are set to take place at 9 a.m., and 11 a.m. At noon, the club will welcome guest speaker Dan Phillips of Project Homestead to the stage to discuss the things that are being done to preserve resources in the community.
The program is being held during “World Population Awareness Week” which is a campaign created to raise awareness of patterns in population growth and the affect it has on the planet.
“I don’t expect everyone to become energy efficient and make changes in their lives,” Moor said. “As cheesy as it sounds, if even one person gets the message then that’s better than nothing.”
